Happy National Omega-3 Day!

There are so many ways that omega-3 fatty acids (specifically DHA and EPA) benefit your body and brain.  I am going to save that for another day!

This blog will be a short and sweet story:

I have been waiting for the test result from a client of mine.  I am happy to finally be able to share his story!  The client has an increased risk of an autoimmune disease because of family history.  Because of this risk, there is a test to look at specific antibodies for this disease. When found in the bloodstream, these antibodies increase the risk of developing this disease.  There are four antibodies that are screened for. If you have two or more, you are considered to be diagnosed as stage I of this disease, and have a significant risk of manifesting the symptoms of this disease within 2-5 years.

I encountered a case study of someone who had successfully suppressed these antibodies with the supplementation of EPA/DHA and vitamin D.  This person also found the antibodies resurfacing as positive titers when taking a break from the supplements (for various lifestyle reasons) then converting back to negative when compliant with EPA/DHA/vit D.  After 23 years, this case study has yet to require any treatment or have any symptoms for this disease.

Being aware of the amazing benefits of these omega 3 oils, as well as lack of adverse reactions, we decided to do our own study of one.  We measured his baseline omega 3 index.  We began supplementation at a moderate dose of 1500mg and measured his levels again after 3 months.  His numbers had improved but were not at the goal yet.  We doubled his supplementation to 3,000mg and measured again in 3 months.  He was in a good range!  The client is extremely disciplined at taking both supplements daily.  We had him continue this effective dose for another 3 months then tested for his autoimmune specific antibodies.  One of the two had converted to negative – it was no longer in his body!  He is now at a much lower risk of clinical disease and no longer in stage I disease!

A strong suggestion is that the supplements decrease inflammatory damage while increasing antioxidant repair.   And that means a healthier body all around; a strong body that will thrive above injury; an immune body that will not make antibodies against itself.

Most people will require from 500mg to 4,000mg of fish oil supplementation to have health benefits.  It is important to check the label and see DHA+EPA make up most of the total fish oil in milligrams.  Always check with your health care provider before starting or stopping vitamins and supplements.

As much as I endorse food first to extract your nourishment, we simply cannot get enough omega-3 fatty acids in our diets without risking levels of toxicity.  I even tested myself to get a baseline.  I live a moderately healthy lifestyle, have grassfed/pastured eggs/dairy/meat, and enjoy tuna or salmon weekly.  I was not taking any vitamins or supplements.  I was shocked to see my omega 3 was so low!  I was not getting enough omega 3 in my diet and lifestyle, and now I supplement with 1,000mg a day.  I have not retested to see if this dose is effective for my body, as my client did.  But I am thinking about that………
