Healthy Honey Habits

  1. Have 2 teaspoons of raw local honey off the spoon every day.

  2. Reach for the honey when you need a little sweetener added to your beverage, yogurt, fruit, milk, toast, etc.

  3. Keep it front line in your medicine cabinet and have a teaspoon to soothe that cough and sore throat.

Honey, often referred to as "liquid gold," is not only a delicious natural sweetener but also a treasure trove of health benefits. For centuries, this golden elixir has been cherished for its medicinal properties and culinary uses. I will be honest, until I met my brother-in-law (who is a long time bee keeper), I did not give honey the respect or attention it deserves! Now that I have seen the benefits and importance of honey for well balanced nutrition, I try to get myself and my family to have 2 teaspoons of raw local honey off the spoon every day. My son likes to have his right before leaving the house for sports practices or games, for a little healthy energy boost.

In this blog, we'll delve into the incredible world of honey and explore its numerous health benefits.

The Nutritional Profile of Honey

Honey is far more than just a simple sugar. It contains an array of nutrients and bioactive compounds, making it a versatile addition to your diet. Here's a snapshot of its nutritional profile:

1. Natural Sugars: Honey primarily consists of glucose and fructose, providing a quick source of energy.

2. Antioxidants: Honey contains a variety of antioxidants, such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, which help combat oxidative stress and protect your cells from damage.

3. Vitamins and Minerals: While the amounts are relatively small, honey does contain essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, calcium, potassium, and B vitamins.

4. Enzymes: Honey contains enzymes like glucose oxidase, which produces hydrogen peroxide, lending honey its natural antibacterial properties.

5. Phytonutrients: Honey also contains phytonutrients like bee pollen, which may have additional health benefits.

Now, let's explore some of the incredible health benefits of honey:

1. Honey as a Natural Sweetener

One of the most well-known uses of honey is as a natural sweetener. Unlike refined sugar, honey has a lower glycemic index, which means it can help regulate blood sugar levels better. However, moderation is key as it is still a source of calories. There are studies that show blood glucose levels actually go down after ingesting honey.

2. Honey's Antioxidant Power

The antioxidants in honey help protect your cells from free radical damage. This can contribute to better overall health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease and certain types of cancer. Again, studies are out there and I anxiously await more to show this amazing healing superfood!

3. Wound Healing and Antibacterial Properties

Honey has been used for centuries as a topical treatment for wounds and burns. Its natural antibacterial properties help prevent infection and promote faster healing. Medical-grade honey is even used in some hospitals for wound care.

4. Soothing a Sore Throat and Cough

Honey's soothing properties can provide relief from a sore throat and cough. Mixing honey with warm water and lemon is a classic remedy for these common ailments.

5. Allergy Relief

Consuming local honey may help alleviate allergy symptoms. The theory is that it exposes your immune system to small amounts of local pollen, helping your body build a tolerance over time. While more research is needed, some people find this method helpful.

***disclaimer: if you have significant allergic reactions to any plant or animal products, you will want to test your reaction to each new type of honey that you try. Start with 1/4 teaspoon and slowly increase by 1/4 teaspoon each week as long as you do not have any adverse reactions.

6. Digestive Health

Honey can aid in digestion and help alleviate issues like indigestion and constipation. It can also promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.

7. Skin Health

Honey can be used as a natural face mask, thanks to its antibacterial and moisturizing properties. It may help improve acne-prone skin and give your complexion a healthy glow.

Honey is more than just a sweet treat; it's a powerhouse of health benefits. From its antioxidant-rich nature to its wound-healing properties, honey has been used for centuries to promote well-being. However, it's important to remember that not all honey is created equal. Raw, unprocessed honey retains more of its beneficial compounds compared to highly processed varieties. To keep honey in its raw form, do not heat over 95 degress F. It is still a good choice for a sweetener for your hot beverages (as it is natural, not chemically processed) but you would not count that as part of your 2 tsp a day healthy habit.

So, the next time you reach for a sweetener or a remedy for a common ailment, consider reaching for honey. Its natural goodness may provide you with a host of health benefits while satisfying your sweet tooth!
